To Whom It May Concern: Thank you for the opportunity to apply for a position within your organization. With exceptional writing skills and nearly 2-years of experience in Senator Dan Sullivan’s (R-AK) office, I am confident that I have much to offer and contribute. While I am not a native of Utah, my wife and I are relocating to the Salt Lake City-area in January 2024 in order to be closer to family. Over the past several years, we have had many opportunities to visit the area and have fallen in love with the state—especially the mountains. We look forward to calling Utah home. As a Legislative Correspondent (LC) for Senator Sullivan, I have built upon previous state legislative and campaign experience and developed a solid foundation in legislative affairs, policy analysis, and constituent outreach. While I have written my fair share of letters since starting with Senator Sullivan, LC’s in the Senator’s office are fortunate to receive strong mentorship from Policy Advisors and senior staff, enabling them to gain additional insight into a legislative career. In addition to managing a mail portfolio, my time as an LC in Senator Sullivan’s office has provided me with opportunities to: • Prepare briefing materials, memos, and vote recommendations • Brief the Senator on upcoming committee hearings, stakeholder meetings, and legislation • Draft legislation with the advice of Congressional Research Services, Republican Policy Committee, and ranking member committee staffs In each of these tasks, what most sets me apart is my ability to analyze and simplify complex policy issues. My portfolio includes matters relating to Commerce, Finance, and the Judiciary—three areas which can be very technical. This is particularly true of one of Senator Sullivan’s top priorities: the expansion of telecommunications and broadband access in Alaska. Despite having little experience or knowledge of telecoms issues, through dedicated research and a willingness to talk to experts, I have gained a basic knowledge of telecoms and broadband policy which has been crucial to drafting briefing materials and memos. Overall, I am excited to further my career in government and politics and will bring zeal and enthusiasm this position and your team. With a strong work ethic, friendly demeanor, and an interest in government policy and legislative affairs, I am confident that I am an excellent fit for this role. I appreciate your time and consideration and look forward to elaborating on how I can benefit your company. Please feel free to contact me at (630) 621-2559, or via email at codyschl@icloud.com, to arrange a convenient meeting time. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Cody Schlottmann
