My name is Emily Kim and I am a young professional looking to expand my knowledge and experience within an HR/Operations team in politics. I graduated from Rutgers University - NB, in January 2023, with a major in Psychology and 2 minors in Business Administration and Human Resources Management. I have been working in HR related roles since graduation and have had some opportunities to work within politics. I've had great experiences working with Sue Kiley for Congress and Canvass America. I joined Sue Kiley's campaign team as an intern where I was responsible for cold-calling potential voters. I met and exceeded my goals by making over 1000 calls a week. Eventually, I onboarded a new intern and was promoted to Head Intern where I was able to manage a small group of interns. From there, I was quickly taking on more responsibilities on the campaign and was again promoted to Volunteer Coordinator and Field Director. As Volunteer Coordinator and Field Director, I helped the campaign’s ground game greatly by recruiting more interns and volunteers. For interns, I was able to reach out to over 5 high schools and over 10 universities through making calls to school administrators and posting on HandShake. For volunteers, I cold-called hundreds of potential volunteers from a database provided by the state party and was able to recruit over 60 volunteers. As we were onboarding new interns and volunteers throughout the campaign, I was responsible for training those who were unfamiliar with cold-calling and using our system by creating learning materials. Some examples of materials I was tasked with making are video guides, written guides, canvassing tutorials, and volunteer training sessions. The campaign has also allowed me to acclimate to a high-intensity work environment as we had weekly goals in terms of number of phone calls, literature drops, canvassed voters, and volunteers recruited for campaign events. I helped achieve these goals by leading phone banks, leading canvassing groups, and creating flyers and announcements regarding upcoming campaign events. This role has also allowed me to improve my communication and networking skills, as I was cold calling potential voters and volunteers and interacting with local politicians, business owners, and potential donors at campaign events. I was unpaid for my time at Kiley for Congress. What made me stay at this role is my drive, competitiveness, and my passion to meet new people and work towards a common goal. I was determined to make an impact and bring some change to the district we were in. During my time at Canvass America, I was responsible for sending onboarding paperwork to candidates in multiple states, including background checks and payroll. I also handled sensitive information, such as personal information, to approve I-9s. I learned to prioritize certain duties and handle large volumes of tasks. Although I was laid off from their team, I am excited for new opportunities that will further grow my knowledge and professional career within politics!
