About the Position
The Legislative Human Resources Office is accepting applications for a Communications Director to join the Wisconsin State Legislature (Assembly Republicans).
Located in the beautiful downtown Madison area, our office is steps away from Monona Terrace, the Dane County Farmer’s Market, and historic State Street.
The Communications Director will serve both the Speaker’s Office and the Assembly Republican Caucus.
Responsibilities
Speaker’s Office
- Manage all external communications, including:
- Writing press releases, statements, and columns
- Preparing speeches and talking points for public appearances and floor sessions
- Overseeing social media platforms (Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram)
- Managing caucus video/audio productions, office website development, and maintenance
- Rapid response communications
- Assist in creating constituent surveys, newsletters, and other printed materials.
- Maintain good media relations, including:
- Coordinating press conferences, media briefings, and interviews
- Promoting legislative initiatives through regional press conferences in-district and statewide
- Oversee the press credentialing process for the caucus and collaborate with the Assembly Sergeants’ office and Senate when necessary.
- Manage communications staff, organize editorial board visits, and coordinate interviews.
Caucus Responsibilities
- Oversee caucus communications, including:
- Assisting in Assembly leadership press releases and statements
- Developing/maintaining the Assembly Republican website
- Maintaining talking points for major legislative initiatives
- Contributing to the Assembly caucus Facebook and X page
- Assisting in staff development and managing communications functions for staff
- Providing final approval for video projects, PSAs, and shows
- Organizing weekly communications meetings during legislative sessions
- Develop and execute a communications strategy for the Speaker’s office and Assembly Republican Caucus, including:
- Training freshman legislators
- Planning inaugural and special events
- Advising individual offices on communications
- Managing the Graphic Designer and applications for in-caucus projects
- Developing communications and brand strategy for legislative sessions
Position Requirements
The ideal candidate should:
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding written and verbal communication abilities.
- Demonstrate professionalism while working with Representatives and Assembly staff.
Desired Knowledge/Experience:
- A degree in Journalism or Communications, or relevant communications experience
- 2–4 years of social media experience with expertise in social media platforms
- 2–4 years of experience editing and developing websites and/or intranet sites
- Strong familiarity with website content management systems
- Knowledge of Google Analytics
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
